Synchronous Roundabouts with Rotating Priority Sectors (SYROPS).Traffic signalling and control system and method for roundabouts
Intelligent Infrastructure Companies: Enhance roundabouts capacities and safety
Manufacturers of traffic control and signaling equipment: new signals, new control system for roundabouts
Traffic authorities: increase capacity and safety of existing and new roundabouts, reduce delays and emissions.
The invention relates to a system that equalises speeds and groups the vehicles of each entrance, suitably staggering the arrival to the roundabout of the groups of two perpendicular entrance directions. The system uses vertical visual signalling in the form of circular luminous sections to indicate the assignment of right of way. The groups of vehicles are formed by means of luminous signals at the head of the group, located on the sides of the entrances and/or transversely on the floor of the entrances. The signals move at a constant speed, synchronising the entry to the roundabout of the groups of vehicles of two entrances of opposite direction at a time. The signals of perpendicular directions have a spatial and temporal offset adjusted such that the arrival to the roundabout of the vehicles of the pair of entrances coincides with the start of their right of way.
